Berry – Chronicle of a Caymanian Street Skater

“It’s just a board and you. So you have to discipline yourself, to make the trick, land the trick, to ride away from the trick feeling good.”

In Chronicle of a Caymanian Street Skater, Phillip Berry’s journey is vividly brought to life, showcasing his 32 years of dedication to skateboarding in the Cayman Islands.

The documentary captures his early fascination with the sport and follows his progression to becoming a prominent figure in the Cayman Islands’ skateboarding community. Berry shares his fond memories, such as skating down hills with his youth group and forming a deep connection with fellow skaters. The film highlights his experiences skating in different eras, the transition from a laid-back, surf-style approach in the 80s to a more technical style in the 90s.

The film also addresses some of the challenges he had being one of the first black skaters in the Cayman Islands and the racial dynamics within the sport. Through Berry’s reflections, the documentary offers a profound insight into his character, resilience, and the culture surrounding skateboarding in the Cayman Islands.
